Job Summary/Primary Purpose: The Swim Lesson Instructor is responsible for ensuring the safety of the members while instructing the lessons that fit the needs of the participants and class description.

 

Work Schedule:  Tuesdays 5p-8p and Saturdays 9a-12p.


  1. Understand the properties of water and use them to provide a well-planned, safe and effective class.
  2. Serve as an exemplary model to encourage all participants.
  3. Be a first-class listener, motivator, leader and educator.
  4. Tailor classes to the needs of the participants and offer alternatives to meet the different needs of participants.
  5. Correct participants if they are not using the equipment properly to prevent injuries.
  6. Make sure all equipment is returned to the proper storage area after class.
  7. Attend training for continuing education.
  8. Attend all required department and facility meetings and training as assigned.
  9. Follow and ensure adherence to The Salvation Army Policies and Procedures.
  10. Schedule varies and can include evenings, weekend, and holiday hours.
  11. All other duties as assigned. 

Supervisory Responsibilities:   None


Education and/or Experience:  At least six (6) to twelve (12) months of related experience in water instruction.

 

Qualifications:  The requirements listed below are representative of the minimal knowledge, skill, and/or ability required for this position.

 

  1. Good communication skills including interpersonal skills.
  2. English proficiency; Spanish language skills helpful.
  3. Ability to speak effectively before groups of customers or employees of organization.
  4. General computer knowledge is required to access payroll, timekeeping and personal data via a web-based system.
  5. Exceptional flexibility and ability to collaborate and work within a team.
  6. Attention to detail, creative problem-solving, and conflict resolution skills.
  7. Demonstrated ability to handle confidential matters
  8. Strong independent judgement.

 

Other Qualifications: Must pass all applicable background checks.

 

Certificates, Licenses, Registrations:  Preferred current certification in CPR/AED.  Must complete Safe from Harm training as established by The Salvation Army.

 

Physical Requirements:  The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job. Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform the essential functions. 

 

Must be able to swim 300 yards, tread water for two minutes without the use of hands, swim 25 yards, retrieve a 10 pound brick and swim additional 25 yards carrying the brick.

 

Must be able to see, talk, hear, stand, walk, sit, and use hands to finger, handle or feel.  Must be able to reach with hands and arms, climb or balance, stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl.  Must be able to lift up to 50 pounds. 

 

Working Conditions:  This position works in a well-lighted indoor pool area year round. The noise level in the work environment is moderate to high depending on the number of members using the facility. In addition, portions of the primary work facility may be considered cooler, humid, warm (Aquatic Center and outside facility) while other locations (Gymnasium) may be considered moderately loud in nature.
