Job Objective:

Reviews new and/or renewal policies and applications for acceptability and profitability within Company's guidelines. Prepares renewal quotes and policy issuance instructions for presentation to general agent. Performs duties as assigned by Underwriting/Product Management Teams.

Major Duties:

-  Reviews commercial automobile policies, applications, endorsements, and other underwriting information required to develop renewal quotes. Prepares renewal quotes, policy issuance instructions, other renewal underwriting information, and completes renewal indication forms for presentation to the appropriate Underwriting Region or Product Management Team for approval.

  • Identifies and/or reviews proper classification of risk and calculates (using Company rating manuals, calculator or personal computer software rating system) proposed renewal policy premium and premium comparison to expiring premium. Verifies statistical codes to ensure accuracy.
  • Examines and evaluates MVRs, loss data, acceptability of regulatory filings and other available information to determine proper degree of risk, effect on renewal pricing, noting significant discrepancies, and makes recommendations to Supervisor, Product Management Team, or Regional Underwriter.
  • Communicates by telephone, electronic mail, and in person with Underwriting Units and other departments to give quotes, instructions, obtain supplemental underwriting information or provide other assistance as needed.

-  Reviews commercial auto policies, applications, endorsements, and other underwriting information for acceptability within the Company's guidelines.

  • Identifies and/or reviews proper classification of risk and calculates (using calculator or personal computer software rating system) rates and reviews general agent issued policies/endorsements. Verifies statistical codes assigned to general agent issued policies according to Company coding manuals to ensure accuracy.
  • Examines and evaluates inspection reports, MVRs, loss data, audits, and other available information to determine degree of risk and identifies risk improvement or need for termination and makes recommendations to Product Management Teams and Underwriters.
  • Communicates by telephone, automated memo, and in person with Company Underwriters, Product Management Teams, and general agents to give quotes, instructions, obtain supplemental underwriting information or provide other assistance as needed. Documents conversation.

-  Uses the computer terminal to access on-line MVRs, reviews for acceptability, and reviews application and other available information to enter required information. Corrects incorrect policy numbers and driver license numbers from the daily report of rejected MVR requests.

-  Verifies and/or obtains information via the computer terminal and/or PC policy or submission tracking systems to locate daily, insured's name, prior quotations, and to order loss runs, pend files, etc.

-  Maintains and updates Company underwriting and statistical coding manuals by replacing obsolete pages with revised pages. Orders claim files from Claims Department at Supervisor's request to assist in the overall evaluation of the risk.

-  May assist with the calculation of rates for quotes on new submissions from general agents at the request of and for the approval of the Underwriting Region or Product Management Team.

-  Performs other duties as assigned. Sends facsimile transmission, maintains pending quote files, reviews request for loss experience, and forwards proper loss experience listings to appropriate parties, performs NIFIS testing, etc.

Qualifications:

  • High school diploma or GED or equivalent and vocational courses such as business or two years college or equivalent
  • Basic math, rating, statistical coding
  • Insurance terminology
  • Manuals, policy coverages, endorsements, etc.
  • 2-3 years related work experience

Preferred Knowledge:

  • Insurance related courses such as CPCU, IIA, or AU
  • Company guidelines on acceptability and profitability for applications/accounts/policies
  • Department practices and procedures
