Responsible for significant Pricing, Business Analysis, Product Development and serves as technical resource in the development and testing of rating and policy administration systems for assigned lines of business. Serves as product administrator, directs others, and makes decisions within authority.

Major Duties:

  • Directs others in the actuarial development and implementation of the pricing schemes for the Berkshire Hathaway Homestate Companies (BHHC) Property Casualty products.
  • Designs, initiates, and directs others in their performance of analyses requiring a high level of complexity and independent design, compiles data and computes statistics for use in statistical rating studies
  • Directs and/or participates in the research and development of building actuarial models. Applies advanced levels of knowledge of mathematics, statistics, principles of finance and business to casualty insurance problems.
  • Develops methods of monitoring company and industry results, government regulatory actions, and statistical information to monitor company rate levels and initiate appropriate actions.
  • Serves as subject matter expert on rating structures and product features of significant competitors and keeps management informed of meaningful developments such as introduction of rate segmentations or coverage features.
  • Responsible for recommending priorities relating to the assigned Property Casualty product and initiates analyses, proposes changes and makes decisions within authority regarding changes in rate levels and rating structures based on statistical analyses, company experience, competition, market conditions, legal climate and underwriting practices to management and underwriting.
  • Using sophisticated and deep knowledge of competitor actions and company needs recommends product design changes that address needs while maintaining company underwriting standards.
  • Directs others to revise and/or revises company rate manual pages according to decisions of management and underwriting recommending appropriate cost components for use in statistical studies such as loss development factors, trend factors increased limit factors, expense loads, etc.
  • Directs others to compile and/or compiles exhibits, explanations, justifications and statistical analysis for the submission of company rate filings, state filing forms and manual pages to the Insurance Departments. Oversees actuarial filing submissions and answers inquiries from Insurance Departments regarding submission, such as actuarial justification of filed rates, etc. referring only most complicated inquiries to others for review.Researches, interprets, and communicates state law requirements affecting coverages. Submitting only the most complex issues to superior for review.
  • Issues or directs others to issue written instructions on rate and product changes to company underwriters, marketing representatives,programming and testing staff and answers or directs others to answer inquiries concerning the company rate structures for company personnel.
  • Directs and/or performs ongoing routine statistical studies on the appropriate cost components for use in statistical studies such as loss development factors, trend factors, increased limit factors, expense loads, etc.Participates in the training and development of entry level actuarial staff, educating them on key job skills and business processes.  May be responsible for supervising entry level actuarial staff.
  • Participates and directs others in the development, changes, and test of software technology relating assigned product lines.  Works with software development staff to ensure that the technology products are straightforward and easy to use.
  • Performs related duties as directed or as situation dictates such as special actuarial projects, monitoring regulatory and legislative activities affecting filing requirements, reviewing materials such as industry organization journals, material received from service organizations, insurance departments, etc.


Required Knowledge:

*Bachelor degree in mathematics or related field or equivalent experience

*Personal computer statistical and database manipulation software and programming

* 5-7 years related work experience

*Principles of finance, business, insurance, insurance accounting, and financial reporting

*Detailed knowledge of product line rating and policy forms

Preferred Knowledge:

Company and department practices and problems

Passage of 4 to 7 Casualty Actuarial Society Examinations
