The Substitute Teacher will fill in for any of the education department teaching staff on an on-call basis to include providing on-site classroom instruction and educational assessment for those youth referred to NOVA TC for treatment.  The Substitute Teacher may be working in any classroom/subject area as the sole instructional facilitator and/or may be functioning as the home school liaison and could be requested to be in contact with various school districts to gather cumulative data on students as well as determine the current level of academic functioning and assist in the development of Academic Advancement Plans for their continued education while at NOVA TC.


Required Knowledge, Skills, and Experience:


  • Current Nebraska Teacher Certification: Bachelors Degree in Education preferably with endorsements in any or all of the following: Behaviorally Impaired, Behaviorally Disordered, Specific Learning Disabled, or Resource Special Education at the secondary level
  • One to three years classroom experience.
  • Basic knowledge of Microsoft Office computer software and Electronic Health Record (EHR) system.
  • Ability to communicate effectively, both verbally and in writing.
  • Ability to maintain complete and accurate records.
  • Ability to work with a diverse group of individuals.
  • Ability to work with minimal direct supervision.
  • Ability to deal with crisis situations.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with coworkers, program members, and appropriate community agencies.
  • Ability to function as a member of a multidisciplinary team.
  • To screen for academic strengths and weaknesses.
  • Valid driver’s license that meets agency standards and ability to meet transportation needs of agency.


Major Responsibilities:


  • Be available to fulfill a variety of teaching roles in an on-call status.
  • Provide classroom instruction for youth in lieu of the regular classroom teacher.
  • Utilize lesson plans as delineated by classroom teacher to provide classroom instruction.
  • Maintain a disciplined and healthy classroom environment. 
  • Establish and maintain the necessary equipment and supplies for a fully equipped classroom.
  • Access student cumulative records from the appropriate school district for continuation of education of youth as needed.
  • Determine through testing, observation and classroom instruction, the current academic level of functioning of students.
  • Document educational program findings for clinical and educational records.
  • Prepare written reports of student progress as directed.
  • Work closely with other education staff to ensure comprehensive planning and implementation of educational services.
