Start your civil engineering career with Kirkham Michael! This entry-level full-time position located in the Ellsworth, Kansas office will be focused on Transportation Engineering road and bridge design. The candidate will work under the direction of a senior team member and receive specific instruction for required tasks and project components. You will create design drawings and conduct basic engineering calculations on assigned portions of multiple projects. Instruction in basic Microstation and OpenRoads will be provided as you begin to apply engineering education to practical design solutions.

Assignments will be tailored to the course work completed by the intern and may include:

  • Drawing (MicroStation) assignments to assist in development of projects
  • Performs standard computations or analysis
  • Observes construction activities
  • May perform infrequent basic survey services
  • May perform infrequent bridge inspections in the field and assist with generating inspection reports
  • Assists on other tasks such as: preparation of permit applications, material testing, and CADD work


  • Bachelor’s degree in civil engineering in progress OR currently enrolled as a senior at an accredited university majoring in Civil Engineering
  • 0-3 years of experience; experience in transportation engineering design a plus
  • Knowledge of and ability to apply the fundamental concepts, practices, and procedures of civil engineering to projects
  • High level of creativity
  • Excellent verbal, written and interpersonal communication skills
  • Successful candidates will be articulate with professional presence, with solid decision-making, planning and organizational skills
  • Valid Driver's License required
