Lifeguard

This position supports the work of the Y, a leading nonprofit committed to strengthening community through youth development, healthy living and social responsibility. Lifeguards maintain safe swimming conditions in the pool, deck, and surrounding areas. Create a safe and positive atmosphere that welcomes and respects all individuals and promotes safety in accordance with YMCA policies and procedures. S/He also builds positive relationships with members and program participants through effective listening and verbal skills and creatively finds ways to connect them to one another and the Y community.

1. Maintains active surveillance of the pool area
2. Knows and reviews all emergency procedures and responds to emergency situations immediately in accordance with YMCA policies and procedures.
3. Enforces all pool rules and regulations promptly and professionally; notifies the appropriate staff member of any inappropriate behavior
4. Knows, understands, and consistently applies safety rules, policies, guidelines and program standards for the pool and aquatics area
5. Maintains accurate records as required by the YMCA and/or the state health department code
6. Performs equipment checks and ensures appropriate equipment is available as needed
7. Checks the pool for hazardous conditions when arriving
8. Assists with the general maintenance and upkeep of the aquatics facility.
9. Performs chemical testing when not guarding, as required, and takes appropriate action
10. Identifies and celebrates the successes of members and program participants
11. Actively participates in department and branch meetings and/or trainings.
12. Performs other duties as assigned

• Minimum age of 15
• Current YMCA Lifeguard or equivalent and BLS, first aid, and emergency oxygen administration and maintain while employed.
• Ability to maintain certification-level physical and mental readiness
• Must demonstrate lifeguard skills in accordance with YMCA standards
• Ability to work independently with attention to detail required
• Complete within 30 days of hire and must be kept current while employed:
  1. Child Abuse Prevention Training
• Ability to relate effectively to diverse groups of people from all social and economic segments of
  the community and successful clearance of background check.

WORK ENVIRONMENT & PHYSICAL DEMANDS

• Recreational environment; aquatics facility. While performing the essential functions of this job, the employee is regularly required to sit, speak clearly, hear and use hands and fingers.
• The employee is regularly required to stand, walk, reach with hands or arms, stoop, kneel, crouch and/or move a maximum of 25 lbs.
• Intermittent use of pool to instruct participants.
