POSITION SUMMARY:

The Substitute Teacher delivers a balanced program of instruction to a class when the assigned instructor is unavailable.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS & DUTIES:

  • Instructs students during the absence of the assigned teacher.
    • Implements both group and individual lesson plans for instructional experiences for students in accordance with established curriculum.
    • Maintains accurate and complete records as required by laws, policies, and regulations.
    • Instructs students utilizing a variety of classroom methods, adapting methodology and instructional materials to meet student needs, abilities, and IEPs.
    • Assigns and grades class work and homework as needed and may administer and grades tests.
    • Implements behavioral protocols; observes and evaluates student behavior, performance, social development, and physical health.
    • Maintains positive professional communications with parents, guardians, administration, and colleagues regarding progress and concerns.
  • Serves as a role model in carrying out the Father Flanagans Boys Home mission.
    • Directs all activities towards the fulfillment of the Boys Town mission
    • Directs all actions to reflect the values and principles of Boys Town
    • Establishes and maintains an environment that encourages teamwork, collaboration, and ethical behavior
    • Maintains regular, reliable and predictable attendance
    • Supports other members of the management team and their work
  • Other Duties: This job description incorporates the essential functions and duties required for this position. However, other duties may be required and assigned at times and as determined by a supervisor in order to meet the needs of the organization

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES:

  • Knowledge of state policies, statutes, and procedures on education and regulations of Nebraska.
  • Ability to deliver instruction in an effective and efficient manner.
  • Ability to modify or adapt general education curriculum.
  • Ability to maintain a high level of professional competence via in-service education, self-selected professional education, and curriculum development.
  • Ability to demonstrate a commitment to the use of a behavioral approach to motivate student learning.
  • Ability to demonstrate concern and respect for individual students.

EDUCATION, EXPERIENCE, AND OTHER REQUIREMENTS:

  • Bachelors degree from an accredited school
  • Properly endorsed and certificated
  • Previous classroom teaching experience in the field preferred

CERTIFICATIONS, LICENSURES, AND LANGUAGE SKILLS:

  • A current Nebraska Teaching Certificate or Nebraska Substitute Teacher Certificate is required; Special Education endorsement preferred. A Local Substitute Teacher Certificate with stipulations may be acceptable as occasions permit.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS AND EQUIPMENT USAGE:

Extended periods of time in a classroom environment or at a keyboard, workstation, or desk; reasonably expected to have and maintain sufficient strength, agility, and endurance to perform during stressful (physical, mental and emotional) situations encountered on the job without compromising their health and well-being or that of their fellow employees, youth, or families.

WORK ENVIRONMENT:

Work is typically in a normal educational school administrative or classroom environment but may be performed in a variety of environments ranging from highly stressful and potentially aggressive (physical interventions, escorts, etc.) to casual and leisurely, in both indoor and outdoor settings and may be subject to outside weather conditions occasionally. Includes constant interruptions, inappropriate behaviors, and the potential for verbal and physical threats from youth.

A National Historic Landmark since 1985, the Village of Boys Town is now the only National Historic Landmark District in Nebraska.
