The Horticulture Specialist maintains the outdoor floriculture. This position also directs the work of youth and volunteers as needed. As our Horticulture Specialist you will assist with horticulture, floriculture, and greenhouse activities. You will also operate, maintain, and repair a variety of environmental control systems. You will help to determine appropriate propagation methods and raise floricultural crops. Some of the responsibilities of this position will include:

  • Maintaining greenhouse facilities and utilize indoor area for winter care of exotic and non-hardy plants.
  • Planting and maintaining outdoor display areas for aesthetic and functional purposes using approved organic and biologic control measures.
  • Removing and replacing substandard plant materials as needed; conducting annual autumn cleanup.
  • Determining equipment and supplies needed and helping to control inventory.
  • Participating in snow removal and other weather cleanup as needed.
  • Occasionally cleans livestock barns and equipment and assists with livestock feed rationing and ensuring appropriate animal health care; examines livestock to detect symptoms of illness or injury; treats minor injuries and ailments, and vaccinates all farm animals.
  • Serves as a role model in carrying out the Father Flanagan's Boys' Home mission.
  • Directs all activities towards the fulfillment of the Boys Town mission


  • High school diploma or equivalent is preferred.
  • Previous experience in grounds maintenance or agriculture.
  • Must possess a valid drivers license with a good driving record and pass an annual Motor Vehicle Registration (MVR) check.
  • This position is on-call (continuously or rotationally) to provide support. Available to work evenings, weekends, and holidays if needed.
  • Knowledge of a broad range of landscaping practices, techniques, tools, equipment, and safety procedures. Knowledge of an extensive variety of regional plant life and livestock.
  • Ability to understand and interpret written and verbal instructions.
  • Skills in installation and maintenance of landscaping plants and materials.
  • Ability to work with live animals.
  • Ability to communicate productively and to organize assigned tasks for completion.
