Bellevue University is currently seeking an energetic and knowledgeable individual to fill our Assistant Professor/ Director of Secondary Teacher Education Program (Unit Administrator) position.

This is a residential position located in Bellevue, Nebraska that requires significant and direct contact with students, faculty, administration, and external education and community contacts. 

Primary Function:

The position is responsible for numerous aspects of teaching within and administering the Teacher Education Program including the effective day-to-day management of key academic functions and ensuring that the Program functions according to University policy and practice.  The Assistant Professor/ Director Secondary Teacher Education Program position is responsible for maintaining a high caliber-learning environment meeting all Higher Learning Commission and Nebraska Department of Education standards and guidelines, as well as program-specific accreditation requirements.  In partnership with other Teacher Education and endorsement area faculty, the Assistant Professor/Director of Secondary Teacher Education Program will appraise and strive to continually improve academic standards, courses and programs; evaluate curriculum; teach courses; oversee assessment in the program; and handle student issues.  The individual will strive for continued growth in enrollments and revenues, demonstrate an academic entrepreneurial spirit, as well as a commitment to the University’s mission and vision.  

Essential Duties:

Performs the following functions for the Secondary Teacher Education Program to include:

  • In collaboration with other constituents, establishes and articulates a shared vision and implementation plan for teacher education at Bellevue University.
  • Leads the enrollment growth and program development toward a sustainable and viable teacher education program.
  • Maintains a strong customer service culture and positive relationships with internal and external stakeholders consistent with the University’s mission and vision.
  • Assists in the selection of full-time and adjunct faculty and professional staff following University procedures and ensures the maintenance of high quality standards expected of faculty and staff.
  • Has a broad understanding of curricula offered by the Program and provides effective academic oversight of high quality teacher education courses, endorsements, and procurement of program materials.
  • Executes program and course development and modification efforts through collaboration with various University entities.
  • Promotes and ensures high standards for curriculum development, delivery and assessment for the Program including regular review of course syllabi.
  • Collaborates with local school districts, the Nebraska Department of Education, and other Higher Learning Institutions including community colleges.
  • Provides consistent, proactive and student-focused direction to students regarding academic issues.
  • Oversees the scheduling and delivery of classes and programs.
  • Gathers necessary data and writes annual report to Nebraska Department of Education.
  • Facilitates various meetings as designated by the College Dean including the Teacher Education Advisory Committee and Teacher Education Program Committee.
  • Ensures timely preparation of catalog materials and updates to marketing information for print and web media.
  • Supports the achievement of annual strategic objectives that articulate the University’s mission and vision statements.
  • Attend NACTE meetings or delegate if necessary.
  • Adheres to standards and guidelines of higher education accrediting bodies.
  • Provides oversight of program documentation.
  • Supports the University-wide assessment effort and oversees assessment activities within the program and provides outcomes and “return on investment” information to the Dean.
  • Supports university-wide efforts to develop effective teaching methods and models to enhance student engagement.
  • Seeks out and implements strategies for professional growth that contributes to improvements, updates, and expansion of instructional and professional skills related to teaching and curriculum.
  • Other duties as delegated by the Dean or Assistant Dean.

Required Qualifications/Skills:

  • Minimum of a Master’s degree in Education or related field; possession of a terminal degree strongly preferred.
  • A minimum of three (3) years of experience in an academic management or higher education leadership position preferred.
  • Must be certified in Secondary Education or Administration (or have held educator certification in the past).
  • Previous secondary classroom teaching experience required; post-secondary teaching experience strongly preferred.
  • Must have experience with institutional and/or program accreditation processes.
  • Proven knowledge and evidence of management skills in an academic environment including planning, organizing, quality improvement, innovation, and customer service required.
  • Must have demonstrated work experience with learners of diverse backgrounds and a history of commitment to active learning.
  • Must demonstrate strong interpersonal skills and the ability to establish relationships with the faculty, staff, and students in a collegial and multicultural environment.
  • Must be detail-oriented and possess excellent organizational problem solving and planning skills.
  • Must possess ability to prioritize and handle multiple projects simultaneously in a fast-paced environment.
  • Must be a self-starter and have the ability to work as part of a team.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills required.
  • Must be able to deal proactively with ambiguity and be flexible to meet changing priorities to achieve business objectives.
  • Must possess the ability to maintain integrity and confidentiality in accordance with University policy in all interactions.
  • Solid knowledge and skills with technologies appropriate to the teaching and learning process, as well as Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, Outlook, XP, Internet) computer software recommended.

Preferred Skills/Qualifications:

  • Terminal degree
  • Degree/certification endorsement in special education
  • Higher education teaching experience
