Whether you’re coming from college, a coding bootcamp, or self-teaching, starting a new career in software development is a daunting proposition. There’s so much to learn. Everyone around you seems to be an industry titan with infinitely more knowledge than you. Even more daunting, perhaps, is the task of building that new career and advancing from being a Jr. developer to one of your company’s rock stars.
In this session we will discuss some of the challenges we face, the more common pitfalls that ensnare us, and some of the tips and tricks that will help us do more than survive. We will take a hands-on look at some of the most commonly used tools and technologies that will make you more efficient and effective so that you can increase your contribution to your team/company.
About the presenter:
My name is German Portillo (“Herman”). I spent the first 15 years of my professional career in Christian Ministry. Having always loved technology (and being complete nerd at heart), in 2014 I enrolled at Centriq Training, a coding bootcamp in Kansas City that prepares students to launch a new career in IT. Four months, and many late-night-banding-my-head-against-the-desk sessions, later I was a Software Engineer at a local software company. Four years after that, I am a Sr. Software Engineer at a software company in downtown Kansas City. I work on a medium-sized team that is rewriting a legacy application into a cloud web application built on the latest technologies available. Solving problems with software has become my passion, which goes hand-in-hand with my passion to help others learn, grow, and blow past all the self-imposed barriers that hold us back.
