Dakota Gasification Company

The Great Plains Synfuels Plant is the only commercial-scale coal gasification plant in the United States that produces synthetic natural gas and other byproducts. Located near Beulah in southwestern North Dakota, the synfuels plant has been owned and operated by Dakota Gasification Company, a subsidiary of Basin Electric Power Cooperative since 1988.

The $2.1 billion plant began operating in 1984. Using the Lurgi processes, the synfuels plant gasifies lignite coal to produce valuable gases and liquids. The average daily production is about 172 million cubic feet of natural gas, the majority of which is piped to Ventura, Iowa, for distribution in the eastern United States. Many byproducts are also produced and marketed in the United States and worldwide.

A portion of the gas produced is used to make some of the byproducts. For example, the plant produces gases like xenon and krypton for the nation’s lighting industry. It markets anhydrous ammonia as fertizilier for farming and liquired nitrogen for use as a refrigeratant, phenol for the production of resins in the plywood instury and cresylic acid for the chemical industry.
