Gastroenterology is a subspecialty of Internal Medicine which devotes itself to the diagnosis and treatment of diseases and disorders affecting the digestive system. The digestive system includes those organs of the alimentary tract; the esophagus, stomach, small intestine and colon. It also includes other intra-abdominal organs; the liver, pancreas, gallbladder and biliary system. All of these structures are included in the subspecialty of gastroenterology.

In addition to consultation, diagnosis and treatment of these various diseases, a major part of gastroenterology involves the performance of certain specialized diagnostic studies. These procedures are performed using fiberoptic instruments or scopes which can be passed into the body visualizing the inside of the digestive system. These studies are generally termed endoscopic procedures and include visualization of the upper GI tract (endoscopy) or lower GI tract (colonoscopy). Another procedure which is designed to study the pancreas, liver and biliary tree is termed ERCP (endoscopic retrograde cholangiopancreatography).

Therapeutic maneuvers can be carried out during the performance of these tests. Biopsies can be taken for diagnosis of certain diseases. Bleeding can be stopped with various techniques. Polyps can be removed. Laser can be used. Other forms of treatment can be given. Each of the doctors at Midwest Gastrointestinal Associates PC, is thoroughly trained and experienced in the diagnosis and treatment of these disorders as well as the performance of the endoscopic procedures.
